The battle for Big 12 supremacy between the league69传媒檚 top two scoring teams was a defensive slugfest before Serena Sundell took over.

The senior guard scored 23 of her game-high 27 points in the second half, and No. 12 Kansas State women69传媒檚 basketball made seven of its last eight shots to topple No. 9 TCU 59-50 Wednesday and claim sole possession of first place in the conference.

After shooting a dismal 9 of 31 in the first half, the Wildcats (22-2, 10-1 Big 12) made 59% of their shots in the second, more than doubling their first-half scoring output.

69传媒淚 credit my teammates for keeping me in the game mentally at halftime,69传媒 said Sundell, who went 11 of 21 shooting with six rebounds and four assists. 69传媒淲e were all talking about, 69传媒楾hose are good shots. If we get those same exact shots, we69传媒檙e going to be fine in the second half.69传媒69传媒

Points came at a premium for both teams in the first quarter, which ended with an 8-8 tie. K-State outscored the Horned Frogs 9-5 to open the second frame, but TCU (21-3, 9-2 Big 12) ended on a 12-2 run to take a 25-19 lead at halftime.

Jaelyn Glenn, who finished with 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting, was the only K-State player to shoot above 50% in the first half.

69传媒淚 thought Jae was the one who kind of kept us in it,69传媒 coach Jeff Mittie said. 69传媒淚t seemed like when the offense was really struggling, Jae was making enough plays to keep us going. 69传媒 I just thought she was steady all night. And you know, we69传媒檝e said numerous times here, we69传媒檙e a better team with Jae on the floor. There69传媒檚 no doubt about it.69传媒

Glenn scored the first 5 points of the third quarter just as she had in the second, and Sundell notched the Wildcats69传媒 next 8, giving them a 32-29 lead. When a 3-pointer from the Horned Frogs69传媒 Aaliyah Roberson tied it, K-State responded with an 11-4 spree to build a 43-36 advantage after three stanzas.

Sundell and Glenn combined for 22 of the Wildcats69传媒 24 points in the third.

K-State missed its first five shots of the fourth period, allowing TCU to score 8 straight points and reclaim the edge at 44-43.

The Wildcats only missed one more shot after that, and it came with less than a minute to go when they had built their cushion to 9.

Gisela Sanchez hit a 3-pointer to give K-State the lead for good at 48-46 with 6:13 remaining, and Temira Poindexter later buried another one to launch the 7-0 run the Wildcats ended the game on. They made just five 3-pointers Wednesday after sinking a season-high 15 at Kansas on Sunday.

They found success in the paint, however. Without 6-foot-6 All-American Ayoka Lee and at a height disadvantage against TCU69传媒檚 6-foot-7 star Sedona Prince, K-State outscored the Horned Frogs 32-20 in the paint. Often, that involved Sundell taking her defender one-on-one in the paint.

69传媒淚n the second half, they played her at center, and she absolutely destroyed us in the post, just getting layup after layup,69传媒 TCU coach Mark Campbell said of Sundell. 69传媒淭hat69传媒檚 what makes her special.69传媒

Because they ran more plays to isolate Sundell on offense than usual, the Wildcats 69传媒 who lead the nation in assists per game 69传媒 produced a season-low 11 assists on 25 made shots.

Sundell made four of K-State69传媒檚 seven baskets in the fourth quarter and assisted on two others.

69传媒淪he69传媒檚 just a winner,69传媒 Mittie said. 69传媒...She made a lot of winning plays.69传媒

69传媒楨veryone was flying69传媒

While K-State worked to find its feet offensively, it served a masterful defensive performance.

The Wildcats held TCU, which entered the game averaging 81 points per game, to a season-low 50 points and none in the final 4 minutes.

69传媒淭hat offensive team, holding them 50 points throughout the game is just, I mean, that was a heck of an effort by us tonight,69传媒 Sundell said.

For a third straight game, K-State stretched the floor defensively, often using its speed and length to pressure the Horned Frogs in the back court. The Wildcats set that tone early, forcing four turnovers before TCU attempted its first shot.

They finished with 15 points off 17 Horned Frog turnovers, 12 of which came on steals. Glenn had four steals, and Poindexter and Zyanna Walker had two apiece.

69传媒淲e had a game plan tonight,69传媒 Sundell said. 69传媒淲e69传媒檝e done a really good job on our scout. We stuck to it. Everyone was flying around. That69传媒檚 kind of been our thing right now without (Lee), just finding a way, having people scramble.69传媒

TCU shot 40%, its fourth-worst percentage of the season. Prince paced the Horned Frogs with 14 points, while Hailey Van Lith added 11.

69传媒楢 tough environment69传媒

The Wildcats, wearing white uniforms with bright pink lettering and trim, won in front of 7,477 fans, the second-largest crowd at Bramlage Coliseum this season.

The first 3,000 fans got a free pink K-State T-shirt as part of the annual Play 4 Kay game for breast cancer research, and the first 1,000 received a free Gap Goat hat.

69传媒淔irst of all, an awesome college basketball environment,69传媒 Campbell said. 69传媒淚t was great to see the support for this team. Today, we simply didn69传媒檛 play well enough to win on the road in a tough environment against a really good team.69传媒

Sundell said there aren69传媒檛 many other places the team has gone where the crowd has been as large and involved as those the Wildcats have drawn the last couple seasons.

69传媒淭hey were big-time tonight,69传媒 Sundell said. 69传媒淭hey were so huge for us, just keeping us in it when we69传媒檙e struggling.69传媒
