In families with children, there was some excitement about the release of the new animated feature-film 69传媒淒og Man.69传媒 One heard the buzz for about two weeks. The character Dog Man comes from a story told during 69传媒淐aptain Underpants: The First Epic Movie69传媒 (2017), which was based on an illustrated book written by Dav Pilkey. Pilkey69传媒檚 books have enthusiastic readers. The movie based on the first Captain Underpants was quite successful. Dreamworks made a television series about the captain.
And now we get 69传媒淒og Man,69传媒 the stand-alone movie. It is witty and imaginative in its visual presentation. One suspects it will please 69传媒淐aptain Underpants69传媒 fans and their drivers.
The characters and backdrops are all effective kid-primitive representations that change as they move of as the point of view moves. So we have what looks like a moving camera showing moving characters in settings with popping details. This is different from the relatively static backgrounds of, for example, the Wallace and Gromit claymation animations, which are also attractive but less active.
The story69传媒檚 plot is surprisingly well-designed. A Okay City policeman and his dog (69传媒淕reg69传媒) are badly injured trying to defuse a bomb left by brilliant cat villain Petey. Surgeons sew the dog69传媒檚 head onto the cop69传媒檚 body, thus producing a super crime fighter who likes to chase balls.
Dog Man69传媒攈is career monitored by television reporter Sarah Hatoff and her cameraman69传媒攈as great success catching Petey. But the cat, who is bent on world domination, keeps escaping from cat jail. The dim-witted mayor prefers to blame the cop rather than her brother, the prison warden. So she orders her star detective off the case.
Meanwhile, Petey has 69传媒 Roadrunner-like 69传媒 ordered a couple of kits to help him with his work. With his clone kit he manages to produce Little Petey, whose innocent good-will incommodes his 69传媒淧a-pa.69传媒 Deserted on the street, L.P. is taken in by lonely Dog Man, and the two of them become friends.
Petey also orders the parts to build a rotund flying robot. He intends to use this to toss an insane villainous fish named 69传媒淔lippy69传媒 into a particular smokestack where the swimmer will cause a city-wide damage. 69传媒淔lippy69传媒 gets into the wrong pipe and ends up leading a rising of monsters made of large buildings.
And Little Petey has sent the robot off to retrieve Petey69传媒檚 no-good father who has long before deserted him. As you can see, the story has several plates spinning on the end of sticks, all at the same time. Relying on its short scene, quick reversal rhythm, 69传媒淒og man69传媒 manages to make all its plot concerns come together in a satisfying ending consistent with the goofy tone of the picture.
The story-telling is much assisted by the movie69传媒檚 jokes. Should we beware the 69传媒渂ox of bees69传媒? What if they turn out to be capital letters painted blue? What do dogs hate? Petey asks himself. Vacuum cleaners. So he gets a giant one made intending it to help him with Dog Man69传媒攊t fails to help.
All of Petey69传媒檚 evil inventions have names that end with 69传媒2000.69传媒 Dog Man69传媒檚 pre-sleep reading is a book of pictures of squirrels. The camera draws back to show a squirrel in a tree, tucked into bed and reading a book himself. The kitten plays piano (with Dog Man69传媒檚 help) reminding us of 69传媒淜itten on the Keys.69传媒 The title of the movie showing at a downtown theater is followed with the comment, 69传媒淚n Color.69传媒
69传媒淒og Man69传媒 has several known actors providing character voices69传媒擯ete Davidson, Isla Fisher, Ricky Gervase, Stephen Root and so on. And their talents help this amusing little movie. Something good to take the grandkids to see.
